Selecting items in a classification list

At the moment you can only select a bottom level element of a classification list. Iw would be good to be able to select a node in the tree as well. To do this currently you have to replicate the node as a separate record.
When applying visibility logic using classification lists you can however select a node.
Should be able to do something similar in a normal class field but make it a config option to allow or not. This would also support lifecycle BIM.
For example:
Security -> Camera > Fixed
Security -> Camera -> PTZ
I should be able to select Camera- Fixed as well as just camera. Maybe we don't know what camera it is just yet, but when we do we can update and select the lower level detail. this is known as LOD (level of Development) in the BIM world.

I've got the same problem. I'm looking for a data collection tool for a university, finding and recording various facility, infrastructure and science equipment. So I'm recording things, and then want to assign the location from a pick list. It needs to work on a City>campus>building>floor>room basis. I've got 12,000+ rooms! So some form of progressive selection tool is required. I've already got the full location table (relational database). It also needs to be able to stop at any level. as some stuff is campus wide, applies to a whole building, or a floor while other stuff is in a room.
CMMS systems like Maximo select the hierarchy visually like MS Explorer. Other systems have progressive pick lists, so 5 pick fields in my case, the next one showing only the options related to the previous selection.
